Embarking on an Alaska cruise is an adventure of a lifetime, offering breathtaking landscapes, abundant wildlife, and the opportunity to experience some of the most remote and pristine areas of the world.
However, what we found was packing for this unique journey requires careful planning due to the varying weather conditions and the wide range of activities you’ll encounter.
We sailed on the Encore - Norwegian Cruise Ship
Here’s a detailed guide to help you pack efficiently and make the most of your Alaskan cruise.
Understand the Weather: Layering is Key
Alaska’s weather can be unpredictable, with temperatures ranging from the 40s to 70s (Fahrenheit) depending on the time of year and location. To stay comfortable, pack clothes that can be layered. This allows you to adjust to changing conditions, whether you’re out on deck or exploring a port town.
Base Layers:
Start with moisture-wicking base layers. These are essential for keeping sweat off your skin during active excursions or while navigating cooler temperatures.
Comfortable, casual pants are ideal, along with a pair of waterproof pants for excursions that might involve kayaking or hiking in wet conditions.

Footwear: Prioritize Comfort and Function
Given the diverse activities and weather, packing the right footwear is essential.
Waterproof Boots: These are great for shore excursions that involve walking on rugged terrain or in wet conditions. I wore Hunter boots and my husband wore a hiking waterproof shoe for all the excursions we did.
Comfortable Walking Shoes: For exploring towns and onboard activities, bring a pair of comfortable shoes with good support.
Sandals or Slip-ons: These can be handy for casual wear on the ship or for brief walks in port on warmer days.
Pack for Excursions: Gear for Every Adventure
Alaska cruises offer a wide range of excursions, from wildlife tours to glacier hikes. Make sure you’re prepared for each adventure.
Binoculars: Don’t miss out on spotting whales, eagles, or other wildlife from the ship or during excursions. A compact pair of binoculars is a must.

Daypack: A small, waterproof daypack is perfect for carrying your essentials during shore excursions. Look for one with enough space for your layers, snacks, and camera gear.
Lightweight Packable Travel Backpack
Swimsuit: Some cruises offer hot tubs and heated pools!
Umbrella: This is MUST! It rains a lot in Alaska!
Hat & Gloves: We lucked out and had pretty decent weather but it can get really cold on the cruise ship and on excursions. Pack a warm hat and gloves just in case.
Essentials for Onboard Comfort
Life on board an Alaskan cruise can be as laid-back or as active as you choose. We sailed on the Norwegian cruise ship Encoure & they don’t have a dress in most areas except a couple of the specialty dining restaurants.
Here’s what to bring for a comfortable cruise experience:
Casual Wear: Alaska cruises are generally casual, so pack comfortable clothing for onboard activities, dining, and lounging.
Formal Wear: While many Alaska cruises have done away with strict formal nights, some still have dressier evenings or other special nights so check your ship’s itinerary. A simple cocktail dress or a collared shirt and slacks should suffice.
Sun Protection: Even in Alaska, sun protection is important. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for those sunny days on deck or during excursions.
Heath and Safety: Be Prepared for Anything!
While cruising in Alaska is generally safe, it’s wise to be prepared for any situation so you can avoid having to go to the ships hospital.
Motion Sickness Remedies: Even if you’re not prone to seasickness, the waters in Alaska can be rough at times. Pack motion sickness medication, wristbands, or ginger candies to help ease symptoms.
First Aid Kit: A basic first aid kit with band-aids, pain relievers, and any personal medications is always a good idea.
Insect Repellent: Some areas, especially near forests and water, can have mosquitoes. Bring a small bottle of insect repellent.
Miscellaneous: The Often-Overlooked Items
Travel Documents: Ensure you have your passport, cruise documents, and any necessary visas or permits organized and accessible.
Reusable Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is important, especially when exploring. A reusable water bottle is eco-friendly and convenient.
Laundry Bag: A small laundry bag is helpful for keeping dirty clothes organized, especially on longer cruises.
Entertainment: While there’s plenty to do onboard, there may be downtime during sea days. Bring a good book, download movies or shows, or have a deck of cards handy.
Tips for Packing Efficiently
Use Packing Cubes: These help organize your suitcase and make it easy to find what you need without unpacking everything.
Roll Your Clothes: Rolling clothes instead of folding them can save space and reduce wrinkles.
Packing for an Alaska cruise doesn’t have to be daunting. With the right planning and essentials, you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy the stunning beauty and unique experiences that Alaska has to offer.
Remember to stay flexible, embrace the adventure, and savor every moment of your cruise through the Last Frontier. Safe travels!
