If you’re dreaming of a tropical paradise with crystal-clear waters, powdery white sand, and swaying palm trees, look no further than Saona Island. Located off the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic, this stunning island is part of Cotubanamá National Park and is known for its unspoiled beauty. One of the best ways to visit is by speedboat, which offers an exhilarating ride across the turquoise Caribbean Sea while maximizing your time on the island.

In this guide, I’ll share my first-hand experience visiting Saona Island by speedboat, along with essential tips to make your trip smooth and unforgettable.

Saona Island is one of the most popular excursions in the Dominican Republic, and for good reason:
•Unspoiled Nature – As part of a protected national park, the island remains pristine with lush tropical scenery.
•Gorgeous Beaches – The island boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean, featuring soft white sand and vibrant blue waters.

•Rich Marine Life – Snorkeling or swimming in the surrounding waters offers the chance to see colorful fish, starfish, and even sea turtles.
•Relaxation & Adventure – Whether you want to unwind in a hammock or explore hidden corners of the island, Saona offers the perfect mix of activities.
Most excursions to Saona Island depart from Bayahibe, a small fishing village near La Romana. Speedboats are the fastest and most exciting way to get there, taking about 40–50 minutes across the Caribbean waters.
What to Expect on a Speedboat Tour
1. Early Morning Pickup
• Most tours include hotel pickup from Punta Cana, La Romana, or Santo Domingo.
• Expect an early start, typically between 7:00 – 8:00 AM.
2. Departure from Bayahibe
• Tours launch from Bayahibe Beach, where you’ll board the speedboat.
• The boat ride is fast and thrilling, with occasional bumps over waves. Hold on tight!
3. Natural Pool Stop
• One of the highlights is a stop at a shallow sandbar in the middle of the ocean.
• The water is crystal-clear and waist-deep, making it perfect for swimming and spotting starfish.
• Your guides might even serve rum and coke or piña coladas in the water—truly a surreal experience!

4. Arrival at Saona Island
• Once you arrive, you’ll have several hours to explore, swim, and relax.
• Some tours provide beach chairs, loungers, and hammocks, while others set up private shaded areas.
• A buffet-style Dominican lunch is typically included, featuring grilled meats, rice, fresh fruit, and drinks.
5. Free Time on the Island
• Take a stroll along the untouched coastline.
• Swim in the warm, clear waters.
• Snap stunning pictures of the postcard-perfect scenery.
• Enjoy a game of beach volleyball or simply lounge under a palm tree.
6. Return to Bayahibe
• Most tours return around mid-afternoon. Some opt for a catamaran ride back with music and dancing, while others take the speedboat back for another thrilling ride.
Tips for Visiting Saona Island by Speedboat
1. Choose a Reputable Tour Operator: Not all tours are the same! Read reviews and book with a company known for safe and well-organized trips. Some popular operators include:
• Seavis Tours
• Pro Excursions Bayahibe
• Viator - vi.me/uOHtX
We booked our tour through Norwegian Cruise Line since it was our first port. I’d recommend using Viator to book. They offer many different options to visit the island.

✔ Waterproof Phone Case (for capturing memories without damage)
✔ Cash (USD or Dominican Pesos) – for drinks, souvenirs, or tipping
3. Wear Comfortable Clothing
• A swimsuit under light, breathable clothes is best.
• Flip-flops or water shoes are great since you’ll be in and out of the water. (IMPORTANT- you are climbing in and out of a boat to get into the water.)
4. Prepare for a Bumpy Ride: Speedboats can be rough on choppy days. If you’re prone to motion sickness, take Dramamine before boarding.
