Glacier National Park Area

Updated: Feb 17, 2024

We rented an RV from Cruise America in early June to travel to the Glacier area. This is a great way to travel with pets. https://www.cruiseamerica.com/rv-rental-locations/minnesota/st-paul-hastings (https://www.cruiseamerica.com/rv-rental-locations/minnesota/st-paul-hastings)

We stayed at the West Glacier KOA. It had a breathtaking view and was only minutes away from the west entrance of Glacier National Park.

THINGS WE DID:

Must Do: Drive the Going-to-the-Sun Road to take in the spectacular views of the 7,000 year old glaciers. IMPORTANT- You must have a vehicle pass to enter the park during peak season (May 26th-Sept. 10 from 6 am to 3 pm) & they sell out very quickly. You can purchase them 4-months in advance and then the remaining reservations are released 24 hours in advance at 8 am MDT (they sell out in less than in minute). Go tohttps://www.recreation.gov/timed-entry/10087086/ticket/10087087 to book (create your account ahead of time). Also, vehicles can’t me longer than 21 feet. We rented a vehicle using Toro https://turo.com/us/en/car-rental (https://turo.com/us/en/car-rental). Another thing we learned, is that the road doesn’t fully open until mid June or sometimes even later depending on the snowfall.

Lake McDonald – It’s the largest lake in Glacier National Park & is famous for the stunningly colored pebbles & rocks. Be sure to check out the historic lodge. The valley is filled with spectacular sights & hiking trails.

Hungry Horse Dam – Is about 34 miles long and 23,800 acres, making it one of the largest concrete arch dams in the United States. It offers amazing fishing, boating, skiing & swimming opportunities. The surrounding mountains are so breathtaking. We found this area to be way less busy and very relaxing.

The Huckbleberry Patch – This place is AMAZING!! We tried the huckleberry shake & pie. They were both delicious. Cute store full of huckleberry items. https://huckleberrypatch.com/

The Whiskey Barn – They have a really nice tasting room and offer tours. We relaxed on the patio and enjoyed one of their drinks. The huckleberry lemonade punch was SO GOOD!! https://www.glacierdistilling.com/

Whitefish Mountain – This resort is at Big Mountain in the Flathead National Forest. It’s a small town atmosphere with a big mountain. The downtown area is beautiful and has so many cute shops and dining options.

We took a gondola ride to the summit to enjoy the mountain scenery as well as views of the White Fish Lake. Be sure to check out the Summit House Bar & shop at the top (great place for pictures).
