When embarking on an adventure to explore the mesmerizing landscapes of US National Parks, it’s crucial to be well-equipped with a well-thought-out packing list. Knowing what to bring on a day hike can make your day go more smoothly and without unnecessary challenges.
Weather, region and elevation are important to consider when packing for a US National Park trip. Weather can be unpredictable any time of the year, so be sure to check the forecast and pack accordingly!
We highly recommend you get the US National Pass, especially if you’ll be visiting multiple parks. It’s valid for one year from the date of purchase. Check the NPS.gov Homepage (U.S. National Park Service) for the most current pricing information.
We just visited Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon & Arches National Park, so I wanted to share things that we thought were helpful to have or wish we would have had with us. This is a very basic list and can vary depending on how much you hike, the amount of time you’ll be there and what time of year you go.
Clothing: Pack according to the time of year. More often than not, you’ll want to wear quick-drying, lightweight clothing on a day hike. If your trail is home to many bugs and insects, it’s probably wise to opt for long sleeve shirts and pants to protect from bites and stings.
Long sleeve shirts and pants also provide sun protection!

Water & Food: When packing for a day hike, food and water are so important. It doesn’t matter how long you plan to hike for, food and water are essential.
You can grab hydration packs instead of carrying bottles of water. If you’re new to hiking and don’t want to make that investment grab a good quality water bottle that’s leak-proof.
Healthy snacks are important to keep your energy levels up. You can grab some trail mix, granola bars, dried fruit or even sweets to keep you fueled during your hike.
Some of our favorite snacks while hiking:
Fruit - Apples & Pears
Waffle | Energy Stroopwafe-
Trail Mix -
Beef Jerky -
Kind Bars -
Navigation Tools: If you’re hiking an unfamiliar trail, it’s always a good idea to have some kind of navigation tool with you, just in case. A simple map and compass are all you need. These don’t run out of batteries like your phone or a GPS.
Compass -
Map - Grab one when you enter the park or download one to your phone. Cell phone service is generally poor in the parks.
Lighter -
Whistle -
First Aid Kit - Make sure your first aid kit has the essentials like plasters, bandages, anti-bacterial wipes, etc. someone always ends up getting a bump or scrape along the way at some point.
Sunscreen -
Sanitizer & Wipes -
Insect repellent -
Lightweight travel tripod -
Binoculars -
So here’s the basics to consider bringing on a day hike! We’d rather be over prepared than not have something we need.
