Cruise Port Stop - Exploring St. Kitts

Writer's picture: Kari LynnKari Lynn

St. Kitts was one of our favorite stops on our recent cruise! Instead of booking a cruise excursion, we decided to hire a private driver to explore the island at our own pace. This turned out to be the perfect way to experience the island’s rich history, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culture.

From historic landmarks to breathtaking coastal views, every stop on our tour gave us a deeper appreciation for the beauty and charm of St. Kitts. If you’re visiting on a cruise and want a personalized experience, here’s a glimpse of what you can expect when you hire a local driver to explore the island.

First Stop: Basseterre A City of History and Culture: Our adventure began in Basseterre, the capital of St. Kitts. The moment we arrived, we were surrounded by a blend of colonial architecture, Caribbean charm, and lively energy.

Berkeley Memorial & Independence Square

One of our first stops was the Berkeley Memorial, an iconic landmark in the heart of the city. This historic clock tower stands at the center of The Circus, a small roundabout reminiscent of London’s Piccadilly Circus. It’s a must-see spot and a great place to snap some photos!

A short walk from there led us to Independence Square, once a colonial-era slave market, now a peaceful park filled with lush greenery and a beautiful fountain. The history here is sobering yet important, offering a glimpse into the island’s past.

Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception

Nearby, we visited the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, a stunning Catholic church with intricate architecture and a serene atmosphere. Built in the 1920s, this cathedral is a testament to the island’s deep-rooted history and culture. Whether you admire its exterior or step inside for a quiet moment, it’s a worthwhile stop.

Basseterre Public Market – A Burst of Local Flavor

The Basseterre Public Market was bursting with fresh produce, handcrafted souvenirs, and the warm hospitality of local vendors. From tropical fruits to handmade crafts, the market was a fantastic way to immerse ourselves in everyday island life.

Brimstone Hill Fortress – A UNESCO World Heritage Site

One of the highlights of our tour was Brimstone Hill Fortress, a well-preserved military fort and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Perched on a hill with panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea, this fortress was built by the British in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Tasting Local Flavors at St. Kitts Old World Rum

After soaking in all that history, it was time to indulge in something a little more fun—rum tasting! We stopped at St. Kitts Old World Rum, where we got to sample their famous locally-made rum. The flavors were rich, smooth, and packed with Caribbean essence. Whether you’re a rum enthusiast or just want to experience a taste of the island, this is a must-do!

Scenic Coastal Drive: Frigate Bay & Black Beach

To wrap up our tour, we enjoyed a scenic drive along the coast, passing by Frigate Bay, known for its stunning beaches, lively resorts, and vibrant nightlife. The views of the turquoise waters against the lush green hills were picture-perfect.

One of the most unique spots we visited was Black Beach, famous for its dark volcanic sand. The contrast of the black sand against the bright blue sea was mesmerizing and served as a reminder of the island’s volcanic origins.
